February Sparkles & Let-downs

Thursday, March 10, 2016

Hello ladies,
I haven't done a monthly favourites post in a few months now, so I thought what better way to round up these last few posts than with a February Sparkles.
Since I do try out quite a lot of different products and not all of them impress me, I decided to include something new to these monthly favourites series: let-downs. I usually give/throw away the products that disappoint me before I manage to accumulate enough to do a whole post about them, but this way I can let you know about the products that didn't impress me right away. I hope you'll like this new addition.

Since I haven't done a monthly favourites post for so long, I decided to include not only the products that I've been loving (or not loving) in February, but also those that have been impressing me (or not) for awhile now.

First up is the CD Lokvanj (waterlily) line* - deo pump spray, deo roll-on & shower gel. This was a part of the BBMU goody bag and although I'm not a huge fan of this scent, I really like the actual products. Both deodorants are without silicones, mineral oils, parabens, aluminium salt, etc. and are a great option for every day. They don't leave white marks and they are quite good at keeping the sweat away - if you're not extremely busy. They're definitely not going to keep you dry if you're exercising or running a bunch of errands, etc. For some reason I find that the deo pump spray works better on me than the roll-on. The one thing I'm not so keep on (other than the floral scent) is the fact that at first they have a very strong scent of alcohol. Luckily this disappears really quickly and doesn't interfere with your perfume.
The shower gel is really lovely as well. It has a very slippery, gel-like consistency and I find the scent a bit more fresh and less floral. The thing that I really like about it, is that it made my skin feel really refreshed but moisturised at the same time. I definitely want to get some other scents as well.

This Avon Advance Techniques Supreme Oil duo treatment spray* really surprised me, I definitely didn't expect to like it as much as I do. As the name would suggest it's a duo treatment that supposedly has 5 nutri complex. After I shake it up, I like to spray it into my hands and apply it that away, cause I've noticed that I can quickly go overboard if I spray it directly to my hair. It gives an amazing shine to my hair, makes it sleeker and way less frizzy. I especially love using it when my hair is curled, since it makes it look even prettier. It also smells heavenly!
Now the biggest surprise of them all was the L'Oreal Skin Perfection Micellar Gel make-up remover. I really didn't like their micellar water since I didn't find it to be that good at removing make-up and it made my eyes very red & itchy. So when my mum's cousin asked me if I wanted this (she got it as a freebie with their new mascara) I was too curious to say no. But man, do I like this. It removes every bit of make-up without any fuss and extremely quickly (even the Lancome mascara, Essence waterproof eyeliner,...). And it does so without irritating my skin or my eyes in the slightest! Definitely something I'll be repurchasing.
Alessandro nail polish in 008 Nude Elegance was a part of their Christmas Calendar (see here) and I've been abusing it since December. It rarely happens that I wear the same nail polish over & over again, but this one is definitely an exception. It has a very thin consistency, which is something I usually don't like, but this one just looks perfect with a very sheer, one coat application or with an opaque, two/three coat application. It definitely has the perfect name as it makes your nails look extremely elegant. I feel like this is a shade of nail polish everyone should own.

I've been pretty much only wearing & obsessing over one eyeshadow combination: Urban Decay Naked Basics 2 (Skimp, Stark, Frisk & Cover) with Maybelline Color Tatoo 24hr Creamy Mattes in 91 Creme De Rose. I apply the Color Tattoo all over the lid, Stark in the crease & Skimp on the brow-bone & inner corner and I'm good to go. If I want to darken it up a bit, I also apply the mixture of Frisk & Cover in the crease/outer v.
It's easy, it's quick, it lasts all day and it looks really nice but very neutral. I also decided that this shade of Color Tattoos is my all time favourite one.
I already mentioned these Metalic Ebay brushes before, but I also purchased this crease one and although it's quite big and dense, it still manages to fit into my crease & do a great job at applying shadows and blending them.
This weird-looking toothbrush foundation brush is also from Ebay and it also strangely works really well. It does need a bit of getting used to, but I've noticed that I get a much fuller coverage when I use it (even with Bourjois CC Cream for example). It's extremely dense and has a crazy amount of bristles. I did think it'll be bigger, but since it's so small it's great for getting under your eyes, around your nose & mouth. But it's definitely not something you would use in a hurry, cause I do find that I need to spend more time blending everything in and it also takes longer to cover your whole face with foundation. But if you have the time and you want your foundation to look flawless, this is a great tool to achieve that.

I also rediscovered my old favourite blush for Winter - Avon True Colour blush in Russet. It's a reddish/brick shade that it's very pigmented, so a little goes a long way, but it makes you look naturally flushed and healthy. I've had it for a couple years now and it barely looks used, since you only need to touch it with a brush. I also find it to be very long-lasting.
Max Factor Creme Puff blush in 10 Nude Mauve is a complete opposite: very neutral, much softer in texture and with a lovely sheen. This one works great with The Body Shop Honey Bronzer since it makes you look like you just got back home from a relaxing, two-weeks long holiday at the Maldives. It's also one of those that work with no matter what kind of make-up you're wearing on your eyes/lips.

I've also rediscovered the Essence Stay Matt lip creams & KIKO Velvet mat-satin lipstick in 602 Natural Rose. This lipstick has been living on top of my Alex drawers and I kinda forgot about it, which is a shame, cause I'm obsessed with the shade & the formula of it, plus it lasts a lifetime on my lips.
I'm still gutted that Essence decided to discontinue these lip creams cause they have one of the best formulas out there; they're creamy, opaque, comfortable to wear and they don't dry out my lips. I've been especially loving 03 Soft Nude and sometimes adding a bit of 01 Velvet Rose in the centre of my lips.
I also have another winning lip combination: Avon Color Trend Kiss 'n' go in Amour* with the Artistry Automatic lipliner pencil in Pink nude.
The lipstick itself is possibly the cutest lipstick ever, I mean just look at those engraved hearts. It's also very creamy, with a lovely sheen and sweet scent. And the Artistry lipliner is one of the best lipliners that I've ever tried. It's very opaque, not too soft or too hard, extremely long-lasting and with an amazing lip brush on the other end. The shade Pink Nude is that dirty, browny nude shade that gives Amour (which is a very soft, peachy-pink) a bit more definition & depth. Thank you once again Tatjana, for having a giveaway with this lipliner, I would probably never buy it myself.
I also found a new favourite lip balm. Yes, you've heard that right, I like the Eucerin Lip Repair* more than the Le Petit Olivier Argan lip balm stick. I find this Eucerin lip balm to be extremely moisturising and nourishing, it kept my lips in a perfect condition while I was sick. Since it's also very glossy, it also works as a gloss for those no make-up make-up days and I sometimes even apply it over some matte lipsticks. I also really like the squeeze tube, it works really well. Definitely something I'll be repurchasing from now on.

And now onto the let-downs.
The first product that I didn't like was this Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special conditioner*. I took this and the matching shampoo away with me for New Years and thank god I only had to wash my hair once while we were there.
I really liked the shampoo, it's extremely minty, fresh and clarifying, but this conditioner is awful. I've tried it with two different shampoos at home after that as well, and I had the same result every time - extremely knotty, frizzy, dry and dull looking hair. I had so many knots in my hair, which is just strange cause I don't have that problem otherwise and since this claims to help with unruly/knotty hair and my head just looked like a dried up ball of hay. It also has a very minty scent and very thick consistency, but unless you have extremely oily hair I can't see how this could work for you (I'm even sceptical about that).
Unfortunately this next product was kinda expected to be a let-down since I already read so many negative reviews of other Slovenian bloggers. I'm talking about the Essence TE Happy girls are pretty multi colour blush in 01 You sweeten my day! I love the look of it so much that I didn't actually want to use it, but I finally decided to and it would be better if I didn't.
It has a very dry consistency that's powdery and hardly gives any colour pay-off. No matter how much I build it up, it barely shows on my skin and even then it's gone after an hour or so. The only way I can wear it, is when I'm not wearing any foundation, just concealer under my eyes and some mascara. It's sad cause Essence trend edition products are usually very good and this had all the potential to be one of them.
Now the last product was a big surprise. I've only heard great things about the Liz Earl Cleanse & Polish hot cloth cleanser, but I just don't get the hype. It has a thicker creamy consistency with a minty/earthy scent. Whenever I use it, it feels like I came home extremely drunk & I'm trying to remove my make-up with my night-time moisturiser. I also noticed that I need a lot of it to remove my make-up and even then it struggles to remove it properly, especially if I was wearing a lot of eye make-up and the Lancome mascara. I'm also not a fan of the scent and I've noticed that it makes my cheeks & eyes really red.
