The Battle of Micellar waters

Friday, December 13, 2013

Hello ladies, I was debating whether I should write this post or not, because the micellar waters are becoming quite a controversial thing to discuss.
But people are different and we have different opinions so I decided to share my thoughts with you anyway.

I would like to start by telling you that my eyes are extremely sensitive. Before I even knew about Micellar waters and before they became available in my country, there was only one eye makeup remover that didn't irritate my eyes. And that was the Nivea Gentle eye makeup remover, and it's not even funny how many different eye makeup removers I've tried and didn't get along with.
In general I think that Micellar waters are the bomb. They remove your makeup so much faster and effortless and they come in much bigger bottles than normal eye makeup removers. I know that you can use micellar waters to remove all of your makeup, but I do, however, only use them to remove my eye makeup.

Today, I'll be talking about the L'oreal Paris Skin Perfection 3 in 1 Purifying Micellar Solution (or Hydra Active 3 Mizellen-Technologie Reinigungsfluid), the Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Solution and the Bourjois Micellar Cleansing water.

The first one I tried was the Bourjois one and  from the very start I really liked it, and I actually repurchased quite a few bottles by now. Then when I went to Paris I of course had to get Bioderma. I wasn't sure if I should only get the smaller one or if I should get the 500ml as well. At the end I decided to get both, a smaller one and a pack of two 500ml ones. I was so anxious to get to the hotel and try this famous Bioderma, to see what the fuss was all about. I was hooked the second I tried it. The only problem with Bioderma is that it's quite expensive in Slovenia and I heard some bloggers talk about the potential dupe for Bioderma, about the L'oreal solution and went and got that one too.

Enough of the story, let's jump into the review.
All three of them are meant for sensitive skin and they come in different sizes. They all are supposed to be fragrance free, but I do think that every single one of them has a significant scent.

As I already said, I really like the Bourjois micellar water, it's gentle, it doesn't irritate my eyes, it removes my eye makeup quite well, but it struggles with removing the Maybelline Rocket mascara, especially if I wear lots of it. I also like the packaging, it's quite sleek and the lid is a lot sterdy than with the L'oreal one. In my opinion this one has the strongest scent of all three. I only wish it wasn't available just in E'leclerc.

The next one is the L'oreal one. This one, on the other hand, makes my eye extremely red, and after I use it my under eye area always feels very tight and dry. I also don't think it removes my eye makeup well, because I need to rub quite hard to get it off, especially if I wear the Rocket mascara. I do however really like the packaging, except the lid is not the most practical one. This micellar water is also the easiest to get a hold of in Slovenia, since they sell it in DM and Müller.

And saving the best for the last. Bioderma. I was really blown away the first time I used it; I just applied a small amount onto a cotton pad, let it sit for awhile on my eyes and with one swipe, everything came off.
It doesn't matter how much mascara I'm wearing, or how heavy my eye makeup is, it does it's job perfectly every time. It doesn't irritate my eyes, it's gentle and it doesn't dry up my under eye area.
My sister, who is 10 by the way, actually decided to put on some  a lot of makeup for Halloween. She thought it was a fun idea even though we don't celebrate it. When she was done with her makeup, she looked like, what I would call, a mixture between a scary witch and the Joker. Let me tell you, there was lipstick everywhere. When the time to remove all that makeup came, she of course, really wasn't feeling it.
I decided to use the Bioderma, as I  was curious to see how good it was with removing makeup and red lipstick from all over your face, since I manily use it to remove my eye makeup. Three cotton pads later, all that makeup was gone and her skin felt nice and soft, without any irritations or redness.

For me, the obvious winner is Bioderma. I only wish it would be a little bit cheaper. I would also repurchase the Bourjois micellar water and when I ran out of my current one, I will probably repurchase it to use it whenever I'm only wearing mascara and concealer. But I'll stay away from the L'oreal one, since my eyes really don't seem to like it.

I would love to know which micellar water is your favourite?
